President Barack Obama’s state of Illinois will be home to more than two thousand Edo indigenes from all over the world, expected at this year’s 23th annual Edo National Association World-wide convention, beginning from August 29 to 31, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chicago.
The Theme of the convention, being sponsored by an Edo indigenous organization, known as Akugbe-Oretin Club of Chicago is Patriotism: A Recipe For Development of Edo State.
Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will be the Special Guest of Honor at the occasion while the Keynote Speaker will be Prof. Ernest B. Izevbigie, Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
The president of Edo National Association World-wide, Mr. Franklin Omoruna, and the Chairman, Council of Presidents of the organization, Barr. Dickson Iyawe will also deliver speeches at the commencement of the convention.
In a press statement issued Monday, the Chairman of the convention and President of Akugbe-Oretin Club, Mr. Lucky Osifo said the purpose of the convention was to provide the forum for the reunion of all sons and daughters of Edo State and deliberations on issues affecting their homeland.
“It will also provide our youths the opportunity for positive interactions with their peers from various parts of the world”
He appealed to all Edo indigenes, the state government and friends to support Edo National Association’s Medical Mission and Park Project, adding that the convention would be another great avenue for them to support the ENAW in its development programs.
Mr. Osifo hinted that the occasion would be marked by several events, including a presentation of awards to children of the community who excel in academic works, sporting, philanthropic and community service activities.
The occasion will also feature a town hall meeting which will provide opportunity for political office holders and aspirants to interact with other participants, talk about their stewardship and showcase themselves.
At the occasion which would also be highlighted by a Gala Night, he said there would be Edo cultural dance display by Akugbe Oretin women of Chicago as part of continued efforts to promote and preserve Edo’s rich and enviable cultural heritage.
Mr. Osifo assured that his organization would make the three-day stay memorable for all participants, adding that side shows, such as a tour of important and historical sites of the city would be conducted, including a visit to President Obama’s home.
To be precise, Mr. osifo said such tour would take participants to world-famous sites, such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the iconic Willis Tower (formerly the “Sears Tower”), with its dazzling view from atop.
“A guided tour of Chicago shows you all the famous city sights, then shop the famous waterfront Navy Pier.
This Chicago Convention package takes you aboard a cruise on Michigan Avenue with its beautiful view of the cityscape,” the statement said.
In addition there will be a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry and Hapo Studio.
Akugbe Oretin of Chicago has also made an arrangement with the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C. to issue passports to Nigerians who need them during the convention.
